Below the transportation we have used in New Zealand so far:
Bus
The InterCity Bus system worked very well for us and our fold-able bikes. Although it is at the discretion of the bus driver, if they take bikes we never had any issues.
Trains
There are three long distance train lines in New Zealand. The North Island’s route is called the Northern Explorer train. It runs from Auckland to Wellington. The South Island’s routes are the Coastal Pacific train, which runs from Picton to Christchurch and the TranzAlpine train that runs from Christchurch to Greymouth.
Ferry
There a two ferry lines connecting the north and south island. They both leave from Wellington and arrive in Picton.
